Choosing the Right Course

Which course is right for me?

We offer two different in-person course experiences, designed for different levels of experience.

Our Foundation Course is designed for complete beginners, while our Collections Weeks are for jewellers who already have some experience with silversmithing and are ready to develop their skills further.

If you're unsure which course is right for you, please get in touch via hello@cognacjewelleryschool.com. We'd be very happy to help you decide.

Do I need previous experience to attend the Foundation Course?

No previous experience is necessary. Our Foundation Course is designed specifically for complete beginners, and we'll guide you through every technique, step by step.

Whether you've never picked up a jeweller's saw or have simply always wanted to learn how to make your own jewellery, you're very welcome.

Do I need previous experience to attend a Collections Week?

Yes. Our Collections Weeks are designed for jewellers who already have some experience with traditional silversmithing and are comfortable with the fundamental techniques.

You should have a working knowledge of basic jewellery-making skills, including sawing, filing, basic soldering and forming metal. These courses are not designed for complete beginners.

If you're unsure whether your experience is sufficient, please get in touch and tell us a little about your background. We'll be happy to advise.

Can I attend a Collections Week if I've only studied silver clay?

Our Collections Weeks focus on traditional silversmithing techniques as well as some silver clay work, so previous experience with silver clay alone may not provide the foundation needed to participate comfortably.

If you've primarily worked with silver clay and would like to develop your traditional silversmithing skills, we'd recommend starting with our Foundation Course.

General Questions

What language is the course taught in?

All teaching is conducted in English.

Are materials included?

Yes! All the materials you'll need to complete your course are included, including silver, gemstones, silver clay, solder and other consumables. You won't need to purchase materials separately.

The Course Experience

What will I learn during the course?

Each course follows a carefully structured programme designed to help you develop your jewellery-making skills and create a collection of beautiful, wearable pieces. You'll learn a range of traditional silversmithing and silver clay techniques, with projects designed to build your knowledge and confidence as you progress.

How many people will be on the course?

We keep our classes small, with a maximum of six students. This allows us to provide plenty of individual guidance and support throughout the week.

How much time will I spend at the jeweller's bench?

Our courses include five full days of practical teaching at the bench, giving you plenty of time to learn new techniques, practise your skills and complete your projects.

Will I receive individual tuition?

Absolutely. With a maximum of six students, there's plenty of opportunity for individual tuition and guidance. I'll work with you throughout the week, helping you develop your techniques, troubleshoot any difficulties and get the very best out of your projects.

Will everyone be making the same jewellery?

Everyone starts with the same project and learning foundations, but there is plenty of room to adapt projects, explore different approaches and incorporate your own ideas. I'll encourage you to experiment, make creative decisions and develop your own style as you progress.

What happens if I don't finish all my projects?

Our courses are designed to give you plenty of time to develop your skills and complete your projects. However, everyone works at a different pace, and we would never want you to feel rushed. If you don't finish everything during the week, you'll have the skills and knowledge to continue working on your pieces at home.

Will I get to keep the jewellery I make?

Of course! Everything you make during your course is yours to take home. You'll leave with your finished jewellery, new skills and the confidence to continue making when you return home.

Can I continue learning after the course?

Absolutely. All students receive access to our Online Jewellery Studio, giving you the opportunity to revisit techniques, refresh your knowledge and continue developing your skills after returning home.

Materials & Equipment

Do I need to bring my own tools?

No. We provide all the professional jewellery-making tools and equipment you'll need during your course. You'll have your own designated jeweller's bench for the duration of your stay, fully equipped with everything you need to get started.

Are all materials included in the course price?

Yes. All the materials needed for your projects are included, including silver, silver clay, gemstones, solder and other consumables. There are no additional material costs for the projects included in your course.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

You don't need to bring any jewellery-making tools or materials. We'll provide everything you need at the school, including basic safety equipment.

If you prefer to use your own personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a respirator or safety glasses, you're very welcome to bring it along. We also recommend bringing comfortable clothing suitable for working in a jewellery workshop, along with reading glasses if you use them for close-up work.

Can I buy additional materials during my course?

Yes! We have a small shop at the school where you can purchase additional materials and supplies during your stay. It's a great opportunity to stock up on a few essentials or pick up something special to take home for your own jewellery-making projects.

Accommodation and Travel

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely! Many of our students join us on their own, and it's a lovely way to meet other like-minded people who share a passion for making jewellery. We have a small, welcoming group, so you'll feel at home in no time.

Can I come with a friend or group?

Absolutely! We have six dedicated jeweller's benches, so you can book alongside friends or family members. Just let us know when you apply so we can coordinate your bookings and make sure there is space for everyone.

Can I bring my partner who doesn't want to take the course?

Absolutely. Partners are welcome to join you for the week and enjoy their own time at Domaine de la Ménarderie while you attend the jewellery course.

You'll share a private en-suite bedroom, with your partner's stay priced at 50% of the full rate. This includes daily breakfast, seasonal dinners prepared by our private chef, and full access to the estate's pool and gardens.

While you're at the jewellery school, our concierge, Wendy Harrop, can help your partner make the most of their time in the Cognac region. Bespoke half-day and full-day itineraries can be arranged for an additional fee, tailored to their interests and including opportunities to discover the region's food, wine, culture and countryside. Please note that personal transportation will be required for these excursions.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately, we're unable to accommodate dogs at the château or guest accommodation. We love dogs, but we're afraid you'll need to make alternative arrangements for your four-legged friends while you're away.

The accommodation provides a comfortable and welcoming base for your week, with beautiful gardens and plenty of space to relax outside of teaching hours.

Are meals included?

Yes! All meals are included for the duration of your stay, including breakfast and dinner at Domaine de la Ménarderie and lunch on teaching days at the château. Complimentary tea, coffee and refreshments are also provided throughout the week.

Please let us know about any dietary requirements, allergies or food intolerances when you book so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Can I extend my stay in France?

Practical Information

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend that all students arrange appropriate travel insurance before travelling to France. Please ensure your policy provides suitable cover for your travel arrangements and activities during your stay.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. All meals are included during your stay. Please let us know about any dietary requirements, allergies or food intolerances when you book so we can make the necessary arrangements.

What should I wear during the course?

Safety is important when working at the jeweller's bench, so we recommend comfortable, practical clothing.

Please ensure you bring:

  • Closed-toe shoes.

  • Something to tie back long hair.

Dangling jewellery should not be worn while working at the bench, and long hair must be tied back. We provide workshop aprons for all students.

You don't need to worry about bringing any specialist workwear.

Are there any age restrictions?

Our courses are designed for adult learners. Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss a particular booking or have any questions about age suitability.

Is the course suitable for people with limited mobility?

Our château and workshop are housed in a historic building with steps and stairs, and you'll need to move between different areas throughout the day. Jewellery making can also involve periods of standing and other physical activities.

If you have limited mobility or any specific accessibility requirements, please get in touch before booking. We'd be very happy to discuss your individual needs and explore what adjustments we may be able to make to help you participate comfortably.

Can I take photographs and videos during the course?

Absolutely! We encourage you to document your work and capture your experience throughout the week. You're very welcome to take photographs and videos of your jewellery-making process, projects and time at the château.

We also occasionally take photographs and film footage during our courses to share on the Cognac Jewellery School website and social media channels. We'll always respect students' privacy and discuss permissions with you before featuring you in our content.

Will I have free time during the week?

Our courses are immersive experiences, with teaching and practical work taking place throughout the day. We do, however, take a day away from the workshop on Sunday to relax and enjoy the surrounding area.

If you'd like more time to explore the Cognac region, visit local distilleries or discover more of southwest France, we'd recommend extending your stay by a few days before or after your course.

We'd love to welcome you to the Cognac Jewellery School.
