Frequently Asked Questions

What skill level do I need for this course?

This is an intermediate course. You do not need to have previous experience with silver clay but you will get the most out of this project if you already have some basic silversmithing skills like sawing, filing, and soldering. I'll guide you through the whole process but if you haven't done any stone setting yet, it's a good idea to start with one of our cabochon gemstone projects such as the Cabochon Gemstone Rings or Cabochon Gemstone Earrings first to build your confidence with rub-over settings before tackling tube settings. If you’re completely new to jewellery making check out the Silver Clay Urchin Necklace first (you can always add your setting later on!)

Can I use a blowtorch instead of a kiln?

Yes! This course covers both torch firing and kiln firing methods, so you can choose whichever option works best for you. I'll show you how to fire your silver clay piece successfully with either method.

What type of gemstone should I use?

You'll need a small, round faceted gemstone between 2.5mm - 4mm for the tube setting. The size you choose will be dependent on the size of your urchin. Any stone will work, but until you're confident with the process, make sure you choose a harder stone. You can find detailed gemstone information in the Essential Guide to Gemstones in the Guides and Templates section of the members area.

Do I need silversmithing experience?

Some silversmithing experience is helpful for this course. You should be comfortable using a jeweller's saw, files, and soldering equipment. If you're new to metalworking, I recommend starting with some of our beginner silversmithing projects like the Skinny Stacking Rings first. However, you do not need previous experience with silver clay. I'll walk you through all the techniques step by step!

How long will it take to complete?

The course includes 13 video lessons, and this project can be completed in 2-3 hours of working time + overnight drying time. You can work at your own pace and revisit the lessons as often as you need.

Where can I find sea urchin shells?

You can sometimes find urchin shells at the beach (make sure it's legal in your area to take them), purchase them from craft suppliers, or purchase a ready-made mould from the Cognac Jewellery School shop

Will my piece be solid silver?

Yes! Silver clay is made from fine silver particles, a binder, and water. When fired, the binder burns away and the silver particles fuse together, leaving you with a piece of solid 99.9% fine silver. The tube setting and bail are made from sterling silver.

What if I get stuck or have questions?

You'll have 1-2-1 support from me throughout the course! If you have any questions or run into challenges, simply reach out and I'll help you troubleshoot. You'll also have unlimited access to the course materials, so you can revisit lessons anytime.

Is this course included in the Membership?

Yes! Members get unlimited access to this course and all other projects, plus new projects added every month, business mentoring resources, exclusive discounts, and community support.
