Silver Snowdrop Earrings with Pearls Tutorial - Intermediate Jewellery Making Project

This intermediate silversmithing project will take you through every step you need to transform silver sheet, wire, and a pair of half-drilled pearls into a pair of delicate sterling silver snowdrop earrings.

You’ll learn how to pierce out and shape your petals with a dapping block, how to texture, finish and polish your piece to a mirror finish using a pendant motor, paillon and stick soldering, and finally how to set your pearls. By the end, you’ll have a beautifully finished pair of earrings, and a repeatable process you can use to create your own botanical variations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this project suitable for beginners?

This is an intermediate project and involves both paillon and stick soldering. If you’re already comfortable using hard, medium and easy solder and you have good torch control this project will be fine, but if you’re newer to soldering I would recommend making the Gemstone Flower Stud Earrings first before tackling the Silver Snowdrop Earrings project

Do I need to draw my own petals?

You’ll find scaled printable templates in the resources section for this project. If you do want to draw your own petals you can, but consider the sizing in relation to the other elements as you draw and use the printable ones as a guide.

Do I need a pendant motor for this project?

Yes, a pendant motor (or Dremel) is required for this project. You can do some polishing by hand if you prefer, but you’ll need a pendant motor for drilling, texturing, and burring the tube cleanly.

How are the pearls set?

You’ll use half-drilled pearls and a short length of silver wire sized to fit the drilled hole. The project shows you how to prepare the seat and secure the pearl neatly so it sits cleanly inside the flower. When you purchase your pearls for this project make sure they are half-drilled, and not fully drilled for stringing.

Can I use different pearl sizes or different stones?

Yes. You can adjust the design for different pearl sizes, but you may need to change the internal wire size, the depth/space inside the flower and for balance, the tube size and overall proportions. I recommend making the project once as taught, after which it will be much easier to customise confidently.

Do I need hard, medium and easy solder?

Using solder grades helps you to solder without worrying about earlier joins re-melting. You can still make the earrings with only hard solder as long as you’re careful and you’re confident with torch control.

How long will this project take?

Most students will complete the pair over two focused making sessions, depending on confidence with sawing, soldering and polishing. You will set the pearls with a small amount of epoxy glue which will need time to harden before the final finishing stage.

What language is this online course available in?
