Silver Clay Starter Kit: 12 Essential Tools for Beginners
Silver clay is one of the most accessible and rewarding ways to begin your jewellery-making journey and you can begin with just a handful of inexpensive tools and a little guidance.
If you've been curious about working with silver clay but aren't sure where to start, this guide will walk you through everything you need to create your first piece. The beauty of silver clay is that you don't need a fully equipped workshop—just a small collection of essential tools and a willingness to learn.
Let's explore exactly what you'll need to get started.
The Essential Silver Clay Toolkit
A Cutting Mat
Your cutting mat provides a clean, protected work surface for all your silver clay projects. It protects your table from cuts and scratches while giving you a non-stick surface to work on. Choose a self-healing cutting mat if possible—it will last longer and provide a consistently smooth surface for rolling and cutting your clay.
2. Siligum for Making Moulds
Siligum is a two-part silicone moulding compound that's used for capturing intricate textures from nature and transforming them into silver.
3. An Acrylic Block and Roller
Use these two tools to flatten and shape your silver clay and moulds. The acrylic roller gives you smooth, even pressure when rolling out your clay to a consistent thickness, while the acrylic block is perfect for pressing clay into moulds and creating flat, even surfaces.
4. A Little Bit of Olive Oil and a Paintbrush
Olive oil is your secret weapon for preventing your moulds from sticking. Use your paintbrush to apply a thin layer of olive oil to your acrylic tools before working with the moulding compound to stop them sticking.
5. A Ball of Plasticine
Before you use your precious silver clay in a new mould, test it first with plasticine. This inexpensive modelling clay lets you check that your mould captures all the detail you want and releases cleanly. It's a simple quality-control step that can save you from wasting silver clay on a mould that doesn't quite work.
6. Playing Cards for Spacers
Playing cards are the jeweller's secret for achieving consistent clay thickness. Stack them either side of your clay as you roll to create an even thickness.
7. A Craft Knife
A sharp craft knife is essential for cutting clean edges, trimming excess clay, and refining your designs.
8. Stencils and Cutters
Stencils are great for creating consistent shapes and cutters for quick, professional-looking forms.
9. A Soldering Block and Small Handheld Torch for Firing
This is where the magic happens. Silver clay must be fired to transform it from clay into solid silver. A soldering block (also called a fire brick) provides a heat-resistant surface, while a small handheld torch provides the heat needed to burn away the binder and sinter the silver particles together.
10. Needle Files for Shaping
You can refine your silver clay before and after firing. Needle files are small, precise files that allow you to shape edges, smooth surfaces, and remove any imperfections. A basic set of 6 with different shapes (flat, half-round, three-square etc.) will cover most of your needs.
11. A Set of Sanding Sponges for Finishing
Sanding sponges in graduated grits (coarse to fine) help you achieve a smooth, professional finish on your fired silver. They're flexible, easy to use, and perfect for getting into curved and detailed areas.
12. A White Polishing Pad and a Polishing Cloth
The final step in bringing your silver to life is polishing. A white polishing pad gives your piece a beautiful satin finish, while a polishing cloth impregnated with polishing compound brings out a mirror-like shine.
And Of Course, Some Silver Clay
Finally, you'll need the star of the show—silver clay itself. You’ll be surprised with how much you can create with just a small amount (a 10g pack will make 4 small silver clay urchin necklaces!).
