Anticlastic Silver Bangle Tutorial - Silversmithing Project

Learn how to make a classic sterling silver anticlastic bangle in this step-by-step online jewellery course. You’ll go from silver sheet to a perfectly fitting bangle, learning how to measure and calculate your size, create a clean seamless join, stick solder, then anneal and raise the anticlastic curve using a bangle forming tool.

Anticlastic forming creates a beautifully sculptural shape where the metal curves in opposite directions, giving your bangle an elegant profile and a light-catching finish.

It’s a timeless piece that feels simple and refined, and it teaches you a repeatable forming process you can use again and again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this project suitable for beginners?
You’ll get the most from this project if you already have basic torch and soldering confidence, and you’re ready to combine measuring, soldering, annealing, forming, and polishing in one project. If you’re new to bangle making I would recommend completing the Trio of Classic Bangles Project first.

What does “anticlastic” mean?
Anticlastic raising is a metal forming technique used to create curved forms with sheets of metal. The process involves using a crosspein hammer and a metal forming stake to compress the centre of a sheet of metal and stretch the edges creating curves that bend in opposite directions to each other, forming a saddle shape. This technique can be used to create complex forms in both jewellery and silverware and gives designs a sculptural profile and a beautiful play of light across the surface. Do I need soldering experience?
This project uses the stick soldering technique which is a little more advanced than standard paillon soldering. You’ll find it useful if you are already confident with paillon soldering and recognising the changes in metal during soldering.

Do I need a bangle forming tool?
While there are a number of different anticlastic forming tools you can purchase, for this project I will be demonstrating with the Durston Bangle forming Die Set

How do I know what size bangle to make?
You’ll be guided through how to measure your hand and calculate the correct bangle size, so you can create a comfortable fit.
